It was rumored and then seemingly debunked, but now EW reports that we will indeed be getting a Daredevil spinoff starring Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, AKA The Punisher.

In a bit of news sure to please fans of Jon Bernthal‘s ultra-violent take on the Marvel vigilante, EW reports that the Punisher character first introduced in season 2 of Netflix’s Daredevil is officially getting the spinoff treatment.

Apparently Hannibal writer/executive producer Steve Lightfoot will serve as showrunner.

There’s also the implication that we may see Castle show up in the superhero ensemble show, The Defenders, before he takes the fight to the scum of Hell’s Kitchen in his solo adventure.

“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”

“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,”said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.

“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Steve Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”

Joshua Williamson Signs Exclusive Deal With DC, Announces Vertigo Series Frostbite

DC Comics has announced a new series from their beleaguered mature readers imprint, Vertigo Comics, Frostbite. It comes as he writes the new Flash series for Rebirth, beginning in June, and signs an exclusive deal with DC.

The six issue series with Jason Shawn Alexander will debut in September.

FROSTBITE follows Keaton, a South American woman and a “coyote,” a human trafficker specializing in no-questions-asked transportation of people across dangerous landscapes. Decades earlier, the world entered a new ice age; though the remaining populace has survived and adapted to the frozen environment using new technology, the weather is not their biggest danger. A new disease nicknamed “Frostbite” is making its way across the remaining communities. It literally turns people into ice, slowly freezing the moisture in their cells. Keaton and her crew are tasked with transporting two scientists from Mexico to a science lab on Alcatraz where they are working on a cure. It should be easy; after all, it’s only an elderly man and his adult daughter. But when the transport is attacked Keaton finds out that the scientist and his daughter have a bounty on their heads, and this simple transport job becomes very, very complicated.

For the second time today, Newsarama readers can exclusively preview pages from an upcoming Rebirth title DC Comics initially showed us during a visit to their Burbank officesicon1.pngearlier this month – in this case June’s Detective Comics #934.

And Marvel’s ‘Long Awaited Return’ Is… SPOILERS

Last week, Marvel released a teaser image promising a "long awaited return" tied to Avengers: Standoff!. It has since been revealed that the returning hero is none other than Quasar, wielder of the cosmic-powered Quantum Bands.

And while the most memorable Quasar, Wendell Vaughan, returns in Standoff! to pass on the mantle, the new Quasar is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Avril Kincaid. Kincaid retrieves the Quantum Bands in this week’s Avengers: Standoff! Assault on Pleasant Hill Omega and assumes the Quasar name.

"Avril Kincaid is a high-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent stationed in Pleasant Hill when Baron Zemo stages his revolt. Seeing the crisis around her, she seeks out the most powerfulicon1.png weapon hidden in the town: the Quantum Bands," writer Nick Spencer explained. " When she arrives to retrieve them, though, she’s greeted by a surprise—the owner of the bands and the original Quasar, Wendell Vaughn. He gives them to her, and from there, she uses them to help turn the tide of the battle in Standoff!. It’s a real ‘step up and be a hero’ moment for Avril, and sets her on the path to becoming the new Quasar."

"Avril definitely provides a fresh point of view within the Marvel Universe," the writer added. "That’s a big part of what has me excited about the character—she has unique perspective and hericon1.png own life and background is something I hope we’ll be exploring in-depth very soon. She has quite the story."

Kincaid would be the fifth Marvel character to possess the ‘Quasar’ name, after Vaughn, Phyla-Vell, Richard Rider, and the original — but unaffiliated to the Quantum Bands — Imperial Guardsman now known as Neutron.

According to Spencer, the new Quasar will playicon1.png a role in several upcoming titles, including his two ongoing Captain America series, but hints at an appearance outside those books in the near future as well.

"We have big plans ahead for Avril; she’ll be a major playericon1.png in some very important upcoming stories," said Spencer. "You can definitely keep a lookout for her in the Captain America books, but I suspect she’ll be showing up elsewhere as well…"

The introduction of the new Quasar is seemingly another step in Marvel’s ongoing efforts to introduce and elevate female heroes in its line. Avril Kincaid is the second woman to bear the mantle of Quasar.

Just days after teasing the return of a hero with a star symbol, Marvel has revealed who it is, and it’s probably not who you were expecting…
